Volunteer Dave Wray Retires After 50 Years of Service

Dave Wray, who volunteered with Santa Clara Fire District for 50 years, retired from SCFD last week. Former SCFD Chief Skip Smith penned the following statement about Dave:

"After 50 years of service to the community of Santa Clara, Dave Wray has retired as a volunteer for the Santa Clara RFPD. At his last drill on Wednesday he was driven around in 161 and stopped by Chief Stuhr's and Chief Robyler's to announce his retirement.

Dave served under Chiefs Jack Lamb, Skip Smith, and currently Randy Wood. Dave was a firefighter and administrative assistant during this tenure. He was a pit master at the annual chicken BBQ and as the originator and standing Chair of the Garage Sale and Auction committees is responsible for many thousands of dollars that have been added to the funds of the Volunteer Association.

It would be impossible to calculate how mnay gallons of coffee Dave has brewed over the years at the station or how mnay meals he has helped prepare for Fifth Thursdays and various social events.

As his former Chief I acknowledge and appreciate his dedication and loyalty to the community of Santa Clara and the Fire District. He has given selflessly for fifty years and well deserves the respect he has earned.

He is one of the few volunteers to achieve retired status that  has now served with every one of us who are now retired.

Well done Dave Wray!"

SCFD provided a Chief Officer and a Captain to fill Incident Command System roles at a recent mill fire in Junction City. Units were dispatched at 01:48 on Sunday morning. In total, over 80 firefighters from many local agencies responded to the fire.

Due to the large amounts of fuel involved, the fire is expected to continue to burn for several days.

The Boards of Directors for Santa Clara Rural Fire Protection District (SCFD) and Lane Fire Authority (LFA) are currently considering establishing an ORS 190 Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA). Under an IGA, the two districts would work together to provide all fire district services. Consolidating resources would allow SCFD and LFA to provide a higher level of service to their residents without raising taxes.

For more information on the potential IGA, members of the public and the media are encouraged to view the information on our IGA webpages.  Information is provided about IGAs in general, successful examples of local fire service IGAs, and the reasons why SCFD and LFA staff think an IGA is needed. Copies of IGA-related documents are available for review and download.

SCFD and LFA welcome comments from the public about this potential IGA. If you would like to make a comment, you are encouraged to attend an SCFD or LFA Board meeting. The next SCFD Board meeting is scheduled for August 8, 2017 at 7:15 PM. If you cannot attend a meeting, you are welcome to submit IGA-related comments on our IGA Public Comment webpage.

All website content related to the potential IGA will be regularly updated. Periodic updates regarding the IGA will be posted on the SCFD News page.

Extremely high temperatures are projected for the rest of this week. As of this writing,  every day from Tuesday until Friday has a forecasted high of over 100 degrees. The hottest day will be Wednesday, which is forecasted to be 108 degrees.

Temperatures this high can result in heat exhaustion and/or heat stroke, which is a life-threatening medical emergency. Common symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, nausea, dizziness, rapid pulse, fatigue, and muscle cramps. If untreated, heat exhaustion can progress to heat stroke. Heat stroke symptoms include all of the symptoms of heat exhaustion, and may include a decrease in sweating. Heat stroke patients also can act inappropriately or have an altered mental status.  To avoid heat exhaustion and heat stroke, stay cool and stay hydrated.

Skyrocketing temperatures also increase the risk of wildfires. The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Fire Weather warning for much of this week, meaning that the conditions are ideal for rapid fire growth. Please follow all fire restrictions and avoid any activities which could spark a fire.

Finally, if you or your family plan to take advantage of the hot weather by going to a body of water, wear a lifejacket.

Stay cool and stay safe!

The District would like to remind residents that we are now in fire season and backyard burning is not permitted at this time. Please help protect your own property, as well as your neighbors, by following the fire restrictions set by Oregon Department of Forestry.
